Be like May
St. Paul area resident Miss May Cederberg wanted to celebrate her 95th birthday in a unique way. She decided she didn’t want gifts (“At my age, you don’t need any more gifts!”), so she asked her guests for something different—to contribute to Neighborhood House’s March Food Drive. Her goal was to get 95 gifts to donate, and her family and friends brought more than 100 gifts to her birthday bash. They brought non-perishable food items, toiletries and checks to donate to Neighborhood House’s March Food Drive. Thanks to Miss May and her selflessness and generosity!
Let there be cake
Students from St. Thomas More Catholic School thought of a new and unique way to give to the March Food Drive and help celebrate our youngest participants’ birthdays. They decorated birthday bags and filled them with everything needed to make a birthday cake (even including the candles!) and a small birthday gift! The gift bag is sure to delight the birthday kid and make their special day even more special!
Partner continues a 15 year tradition
Securian Financial has been participating in the March Food Drive for more than 15 years. Steve Gallagher, who helps organize their efforts, said the partnership began when a co-worker who was on the board of directors at Neighborhood House suggested they become involved. “Becky was a board member at the time and told us she felt we should do more to support ‘a very worthwhile organization’ that was right in our backyard,” he said. “The March Food Drive was an easy place to start and we began having what we call ambassadors on each floor and gave them free reign to organize, corral and bring food to donate.”
Gallagher said over the years, people have gotten creative and even competitive between teams and holding fun contests. His favorite? The team who collected money in a jar with a co-worker’s photo on it. The lucky person whose jar collects the most money gets a pie in the face. (sorry, no photos)
It’s one of Securian’s core values to give back to the community, he said. “We encourage associates to give back to the community and we offer them time off of work to participate. It’s a big part of our culture and being a part of the city of St. Paul.”
