Frequently asked questions

Where do I sign-up to volunteer?

We have a variety of volunteer opportunities available.

What are the hours / days people can volunteer?
Volunteer hours vary by program site. Most volunteering occurs Monday – Friday, with occasional weekend events.
Is there a minimum age required to volunteer?
Our on-going volunteering roles require a minimum age of 16 (18 for classroom volunteers), and many of our one-time volunteer roles can accommodate youth volunteers with the supervision of an adult chaperon. Minimum age requirements are outlined in each volunteer position description.
What is the time commitment for volunteers?
The majority of our volunteer shifts vary from 2-3 hours in length. Time requirements are outlined in each volunteer description.
What does the orientation and training process look like?
For most of our volunteer positions, orientation occurs during the scheduling process and over the first volunteer shift. For some roles in our classrooms, volunteers must complete Volunteer Foundations Training (provided free by Literacy Minnesota) within four weeks of the first volunteer shift.
What if I am ill, have a vacation scheduled, or something comes up and I have to miss my shift?
We value our volunteers’ time and commitment to our organization and participants, and understand that planned and unplanned conflicts come up. In either case, we just ask that you communicate your absence (or upcoming time away) with your program site staff member prior to the shift.
How can my company or organization get involved with Neighborhood House?

We offer group volunteering events throughout the year including our fresh produce distributions (great for individuals, families, and groups alike). You can view current opportunities here.

Who can I reach out to if I have specific questions about volunteering?
For questions about individual, group or service learning, email Shane Springer, our Volunteer Engagement Manager. For questions about internships, email Barb Swaiman, our Social Work Intern Manager.
