When COVID-19 began, Charlie was furloughed from his job in IT. Seeking to help the community in a meaningful way, Charlie went to VolunteerMatch.com to look for opportunities, and that’s where he found Neighborhood House. “The diversity, and working with people from different cultures,” is what Charlie says drew him to Neighborhood House. “It just opens up the world a lot more.”
He volunteers at the Francis Basket and Wellstone Center Food Markets. The 3-hour shifts are a great fit for Charlie. He explains that there’s always work to be done and that each day is different so it never gets boring. According to staff, he’s been an “absolute angel” during this time of increased need.
“I try to notice everything that needs to be done and anticipate needs—what boxes need to be stocked and learn from other volunteers. I enjoy [helping] people, being the runner and taking the food out to people. It is an enjoyable task and you get great feedback from the participants.”
Help us thank Charlie for his hard work and dedication! We are grateful for him and our other volunteers in our food support programs who help keep our food markets running.
