Summer isn’t complete without concerts and camping. Believe it or not, that’s only the beginning of what a Neighborhood House summer looks like! Here’s a glimpse at what our community has been up to this summer.
Roger Waters Us + Them Tour
If you were in downtown St. Paul for Roger Waters’ Us + Them Tour this summer, chances are that you saw our youth onstage alongside Roger Waters. If you’ve caught Waters in St. Paul in the past, this might not have been the first time you’ve seen him with Neighborhood House kids as well. They also joined him in his 2010 and 2012 St. Paul appearances for The Wall. A full video of this year’s performance, courtesy of Xcel Energy Center, can be found on our Facebook page.
Youth United 2017
Our annual Youth United event is more than just a day for youth to learn. It is just as much–if not moreso–of a day for them to teach us and freely express themselves in a safe space. Local St. Paul youth ages 13 to 18 spoke with Minnesota state senator Sandy Pappas, city council member Chris Tolbert, and St. Paul mayoral candidates Melvin Carter, Pat Harris, and Dai Thao about the issues facing their community. We’re thankful for the opportunity for our young community members to have power of their own and get the opportunity to speak to their local leaders.
National Night Out at the Wellstone Center
While the West Side neighborhood experienced an unexpected power outage on National Night Out, that didn’t stop Neighborhood House and lifelong West Side residents from showing up to the day’s festivities.
Preschool Volcano Day
Our summer preschool students made volcano eruptions using baking soda and vinegar. Parent & Early Childhood Education Program Manager Amanda Williams made the outside of the volcano herself!
Solar Eclipse from Neighborhood House
It was cloudy in St. Paul for the 2017 solar eclipse, but Food Support Manager Song Xiong managed to capture a photo of the eclipse from the front of the Wellstone Center.
New School Year, New Coats of Paint
Our Adult Education classrooms got a new paint job thanks to volunteers from Wells Fargo!
Camp Victory Trip
Eight young men in our GRIP and Youth Leadership programs went to Camp Victory this month to enjoy some fun outdoor activities including a high ropes course. This was a wonderful opportunity for our youth to travel and exercise team-building skills!
