Access to free, quality education is a universal human right. The Literacy and Adult Education program provides free education services to people in St. Paul and the surrounding communities. Without literacy skills, people struggle to gain employment, provide for their families, succeed in school, become active in their community, and participate in their children’s education.
Our Literacy and Adult Education program helps students improve their literacy and further their education through classes and services. Adult English classes help immigrants and refugees increase their English literacy so they can participate in their communities more fully. GED classes, computer classes, and career training programs offer students the ability to increase their education and workplace skills, as well as earn credentials to secure better employment.
For Alejandro, learning English was his top priority when he moved to Minnesota. He knew it would help him perform better at work and make connections with folks in his community. He began taking our adult English classes and moved all the way to the highest level in just a couple of years, while also juggling work and family. Alejandro now knows he is an asset as a bilingual Spanish speaker and feels like a true role model for his children as they begin school in the US.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, all education is being conducted online through virtual learning platforms. Classes are being taught in real-time and teachers are available during office hours for extra assistance. Programs will return to classrooms as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.
