A Better Kind of Food Shelf Model

You may know that food shelves are based on different models. A standardized food box model is when a food shelf puts together a standard box or bag filled with the same items. A client choice model is when an individual chooses their food like in a grocery store. But the newest model, SuperShelf, takes the client choice model to the next level—and Neighborhood House is getting certified.

The SuperShelf model puts the participant’s health and wellbeing at the forefront. The environment is client-centered and respects individual choice while increasing access to a variety of healthy, culturally appropriate food. Food categories and displays emphasize fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and cooking ingredients, making the healthiest choice the easiest choice. An organization can become SuperShelf certified once they’ve met rigorous criteria addressing these areas.

We are so excited that we’re going through the certification process. It’s important to everyone at Neighborhood House that our participants have access to healthy food and can receive that food in a way that is dignified, respectful, and enjoyable. SuperShelf makes this a reality.

In 2017, we started to model our food shelves after the Valley Outreach food shelf. Through a partnership with Lakeview Health Partners called Better Shelf for Better Health, Valley Outreach food shelf underwent a transformation which later became the SuperShelf model of today. We found that reorganizing our food categories gave participants more of a choice in picking items that they like and use. So for example, traditional categories may be set up so that a participant can pick one oil, one taco spice, one jelly, one mayonnaise, and one mustard. If someone has no use for mustard, they get four items instead of five. But by combining these items into one category and allowing participants to pick any five of their choosing, their options increase and they can come away with more food.

Anne Johnson began volunteering in the food market in 2013 prior to the remodel. She says, “The space was extremely tight for shopping and participants did not have as many options as they shopped.” She explains that since the remodel, “The food market is able to store and display more choices for patrons.” Anne hopes that with the latest updates needed to become SuperShelf certified, participants will feel more like they’re shopping in a grocery store due to the changes in appearance and increased food options.   

When we decided to become SuperShelf certified this year, we were more than halfway there thanks to the 2017 remodel. The last piece of the puzzle was the physical transformation and logistics. We purchased new bins, baskets, signage, banners, and posters—all designed to make shopping quicker, easier, and more enjoyable. We renamed and reorganized food categories based on behavioral principles to encourage healthier choices and discourage feelings of food scarcity. By putting sweets at the end of the shopping line, a shopper arrives with a full cart and is less likely to choose these unhealthy options. By keeping shelves fully stocked and redesigning categories to allow more options, shoppers feel a lessened sense of anxiety that food is scarce.

Becoming SuperShelf certified is all about restoring dignity to families experiencing food insecurity. Shopping will feel similar to a grocery store, allowing shoppers to choose foods based on personal preference. Most importantly, shoppers will be able to get more food than before. We hope that families will worry less about food running out, they’ll increase their intake of healthy foods, and their health and wellbeing will flourish.

Carrie Sowada | Child Development Specialist

Carrie comes to Neighborhood House as a recent graduate of the U of M’s Family Social Science program, where they graduated with distinction. They have more than five years of experience working with and mentoring children in St. Cloud area youth programs, as well as customer service and restaurant experience. Additionally, Carrie has experience in community building, advocacy, and working with children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. In their spare time, Carrie enjoys crocheting. It’s their favorite hobby. 

Valerie Dorschner | Early Childhood Instructor

Valerie has worked at Neighborhood House since 2004.

Valerie leads the Skills for School preschool program and is responsible for the curriculum. She has over 20 years of experience in early childhood working with parents and children, and has training and experience working with neurodiverse and dual language students.

  • Valerie is a licensed teacher with a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of St. Thomas.
  • She holds licenses in elementary education and in early childhood education, and has several years of experience
    teaching elementary school.

Valerie enjoys her free time with her five children and one grandchild.

Victoria Campoverde

Victoria Campoverde is the program manager of Neighborhood House’s Latino Leadership Program. She is originally from Peru and was a licensed high school teacher in her home country.

Her extensive experience within the education sector exemplifies her commitment to education and families.

  • Currently, she serves as the Cultural Liaison between Columbia Heights School District and Anoka-Hennepin School District.
  • In 2008 Victoria began working with The Amherst H. Wilder Foundation’s Latino Leadership Program on adapting their curriculum for the Latinx community. Since then, she has continued working in the Latino Leadership Program after its 2020 transition to Neighborhood House.
  • Coauthor of Education: Our Best Legacy (EOBL), a school success program designed for parents or caregivers with one or more children in middle school. EOBL is part of the Partnering for School Success project (PSS) with the University of Minnesota’s Extension program.
  • Lead teacher and Program Director at Joyce Preschool.
  • A 25 on the Rise, Latino Leader recipient from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in 2006.
  • Facilitator with different Latino parent programs in the Twin Cities.
  • President of Kuyayki Peru MN Cultural Association.

For Victoria it is important to value ones culture and cultivate ones heritage. She believes in the importance of empowering the community through her work with Neighborhood House and the Latino Leadership Program. During her free time Victoria enjoys dancing.

Winter / Spring Fresh Produce Distributions Events*

From November–May, all are welcome to come pick up a variety of free fruits and vegetables for family and friends. Distributions take place at Metro State University in St. Paul.

This event is held indoors. Masks are encouraged but not required.

During each event, we distribute approximately 3,000 pounds of food to approximately 75-100 families on average.

No documentation or identification is required to participate.

  • Requirements: Nothing! You do not need identification to receive food.
  • Recommendations: You may want to bring your own bags and a cart if you have one. On average, visitors will leave with approximately 40 pounds of fresh produce per event. 
  • Registration: First-time visitors are required to register on site. The registration process will take 5-10 minutes to complete.
  • Parking: You can park in the Metro State ramp parking for $5. Otherwise, street parking is available along 7th St. and Bates Avenue.

The Wellstone Center Parking Ramp is located on the west side of the main building. The ramp has three levels with one elevator bank. Take the elevator to the first floor and follow the signs towards the information desk.
Parking is free.
